  1. Not to worry. It is Nature's way of aerating the earth.

  3. Trees take a long time to dry out and die, due to the large amount of sap they contain.
    Good shots.

  5. Looks like a shallow root system and the tree was upended by wind.

  7. Such trees amaze me. They go through the seasons as if they were standing.

  8. Here (NL) unfortunately c.a 1000 trees fell down in a forest due to a storm due to a crosswind. And unfortunately even though the roots were strong she was not allowed to make it. They may well leave this one you photographed because it can be a shelter for many a bird or other animal. Carrots store a lot of moisture so it can take a while before they are dried and really die.

  9. One wonders about the roots and how much it can withstand with storms and winds. I worry about the maple out front..just when will it land on the driveway. We had a massive ice story I would say close to 20 years ago now that took down the beautiful canopy of trees in our neighborhood..and they are still falling from time to time.

  16. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear, did it make a noise? We'll never know. Impressive photos, Bill.

  21. Love that header photo, Bill. The tree reminds me of the huge stump still upturned near my gardens. We lost a giant last year. So sad to see them go.
