In Florida, such a sky would be the signal to get thyself to safety and it signifies the possibility of tornadoes. And we don't have basements here for the most part, so that means huddling together in a small enclosed area. It's a great photo, though, with the darkness and light!
I love skies like that. This time of year we get them more frequently in Washington. As you note, it highlights those other colors to beautiful effect.
I believe we're due to see some of those skies in the next few days, though precious little sun to provide the necessary contrast.
