Maybe someone was trying to take the sap out of the tree. I have seen something similar to so called-maple trees around here which resembles nothing like what happens to the maples back east. Probably a science experiment that someone left to nature and forgot about it. Oh, and then there is that alcohol factor that might have been involved (✿◡‿◡)
