Maybe someone was trying to take the sap out of the tree. I have seen something similar to so called-maple trees around here which resembles nothing like what happens to the maples back east. Probably a science experiment that someone left to nature and forgot about it. Oh, and then there is that alcohol factor that might have been involved (✿◡‿◡)
I don't know if it has a meaning that I'm not aware of, they were trying to make "art", or just to lazy to carry it to a trash bin. In any case it does make for a great photo!
