cattails

 saw these cattails and never knew them by that name, we called them punks.

  1. The latin name (I think) is Thypa latifolia. They are beautiful, but they spread a lot.

  11. What a great observation It's fascinating how a plant can have so many different names depending on where you are.

    I looked it up and "punk" is a name used in some parts of the United States and Canada for cattails Do you know what makes them look like that when they are dry.

  18. We introduced our two year old grandson to cattails recently. Understandably, he conflated them with his family cat and had a lot of questions, ha.

  19. We called them cattails growing up. My mom would cut some and bring them into the house for decoration. But, she always sprayed them with hairspray first so they wouldn't get fuzzy.
