Doherty's corner store

It’s the end of an era as the owners of Doherty’s corner shop, best known as “Fintan’s”, in Carndonagh have announced they are to close.

The store will close its doors for the last time this Saturday 8th June after more than 80 years in the heart of the town.

The Fintan family said: “Unfortunately the era of the corner shop has long long passed but with every chapter that ends another begins so don’t take this as a bad thing but instead remember those fond memories that where created here in Fintan’s from listening to the jukebox while playing pool to getting your ice cream fix and sitting on the stool out front putting the world to rights.”

The family businesses began in the 1940s as a sweet and ice-cream shop and soon became a hangout spot for the youth of the town as they munched on a quarter of their favourite treats. Famous for its nostalgic features, including the original weighing scales, the shop also championed handcrafted local products.

The closure announcement said: “We would like to first of all thank all our staff over the years that gave you all a warm welcome as you came through the door, every single one of you was a pleasure to work with and a huge asset to the shop.

“We would also like to thank all our customers that has supported us over the past 80 + years, it has been an honour to get to know every single one of you.”

Carndonagh's defibrillator

Funds raised by the Neal Martin Memorial Fund committee were used to erect a phone box, that contains a public defibrillator for the townspeople of Carndonagh.
How it works is when you call the emergency services, they supply you with details of your nearest defibrillator & PIN number to gain entry.  They now have three defibrillators available 24/7 in Carndonagh in case of an emergency.  They have started a course of training for the local community on how to use the defibrillators.

colour wars

Pepto Bismol vs French's mustard!  What an interesting colour combination to be side by side.  There are no winners!

Colgan Hall

Colgan Hall is located on Chapel Street in the heart of Carndonagh, Co. Donegal and is a listed building of historical significance in the locality.  The Centre currently hosts activities on a daily basis; has also staged some very successful drama productions recently and has a memorable association with local drama clubs for decades.
If interested you can read more about Colgan Hall.

The  sculpture, which sits facing the front of the above photo,  represents unity, strength and continuity in the local community.  It was designed by John O’ Connor, an artist from Waterford.

the donagh river

The Donagh River is in Carndonagh and it seems to be running low.  We accessed the river via Church Road, one of the major roads in town.  The trail unfortunately needs some repair and maintenance to make it accessible for all people,  Hopefully the next time we are there it will be in better shape and we'll be able to walk further.  There is also some graffiti under the bridge area.  Sad!

Jones & Co Bookshop

We were in Carndonagh the other day and in our travels we came across this nice wee bookshop.  It has lots of good books to choose from and of course we left with one, The Handmade Paper Book by Angela Ramsay.  I have a paper making kit so I can make my own paper and this book will give me some good ideas.
