McGettigan and Sons

We went past this closed butcher shop (closed in 2017) and these signs were on the shop windows.  You see these old shops shutting down because they can't compete.  It's a sad story that is happening everywhere.

One of Donegal’s best-known businesses is set to close as a result of falling sales, more than half a century after it opened.  M McGettigan & Sons butchers is a landmark in Donegal town, where it has traded since 1952. The store was even visited by Prince Charles last year, who was eager to sample the sausages that were named as the best in Europe in 2012.
The shop employs seven people and is run by brothers Ernan and Diarmuid McGettigan, who took over from their father in 1980.
However, the butchers have struggled to compete with low-cost rivals and has now been forced to close as sales fell.
“Small businesses are being interfered with by them and we’re the next ones that have to go. Our father started the business, which is the hardest part about this. We’ve tried everything, we’ve cut costs as much as we can.”

I saw this person working on the door when we were headed to the library in Donegal Town.  It made me think of a forensic investigator at a crime scene.  I have been reading some Henning Mankell books lately so that is probably why I came up with the thought. :)

busstop at the Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town   With people  waiting for their bus and buses dropping off people, traffic everywhere, the congestion builds up especially between 12-2pm and it's crazy.  It is around 12:30 when this photo was taken.

celebrating sixty years, 1958-2018.  The Tidy Towns is a nationwide competition that encourages people to work together to make their community a better place to live, work and visit.

The Basking Shark

was on display at the Hooked Seafood Festival this past Saturday.  It was made by Ciara O'Boyle and Deirdre McGuinness with help from Jackie Byrne, the Drop In Centre group and the Killybegs Men's Shed.

The plastic in the shark's mouth was collected from Fintra beach and surrounding coves and aims to highlight the issues of pollution, littering and the importance of recycling.  Truly a sad reminder of what we, as a species, are doing to the planet.

won the chowder contest at the Hooked Seafood Festival yesterday.  Their shack is located down beside the pier.

CDP monthly theme - teach

St. Catherine's Vocational School, Killybegs.  It is a non-denominational, co-educational second level school. There are twenty six teaching staff, five Special Needs Assistants and three support staff. The student population is 330 and the male to female student ratio is approximately 50:50. St. Catherine’s Vocational School is one of sixteen second-level schools administered by the Donegal Education and Training Board. Programmes on offer include, Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, Transition Year, Nursing Studies, eBusiness, Healthcare Support, Early Childhood Care FETAC Level 5 and FETAC Level 6 Early Childhood Care and Education.
Facilities: The original two-storey building opened in 1987. In 2011 a building extension with two classrooms, fitness suite, changing rooms and disability access was added. In 2014 the autism spectrum disorder centre was added to the front of the school providing first class facilities for students, teachers and members of the community alike. The School gymnasium and all weather synthetic playing pitch double as a community resource during the evenings and both have a full schedule of activities. The school, in addition to its normal daytime schedule, offers a full range of adult education classes and parenting programmes during the evening.
