the quiet man

Statue of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara is located in the center of Cong, a little town in Western Ireland. The statue of two actors is located here, because I. This town shot the film "The Quiet Man" in the 50's. Nowadays, it is a nice statue, where you can see the two actors.

Yesterday's photo of the Cong River has the old Monks' fishing house on the Cong River.  I forgot to mention that so some people didn't see that when I updated it.

being safe

"Paddy the Cope" Gallagher pictured beside The Cope supermarket. His somewhat unusual middle name 'The Cope' refers to his family connection to The Cope agricultural cooperative which operates in The Rosses area of Donegal. The name comes from the inability of one of the founder shareholders to say Co-Op - as he could pronounce Cope, the name The Cope was adopted.

still required is social distancing, 5km limit from home for exercise and if you don't need to be out then stay in.  There are 5 phases with about 3 weeks between each one.  Hopefully we will meet all the guidelines.

statue stolen

the statue was stolen this past weekend.  The article from the Journal.ie website is below the photo so you can read it.  I wonder why it was stolen, certainly someone would recognize it.

GARDAÍ IN SLIGO are investigating the theft of a bronze statue from a car park in Drumcliffe, Co Sligo over the weekend.
The statue was taken from the main car park of the town sometime between Friday and Sunday.
The statue forms part of a larger sculpture which displays the WB Yeats poem, He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven.  It was sculpted by Jackie McKenna and was first unveiled in 2003. The grave of WB Yeats is located at Drumcliffe Church.  “After last nights wonderful Carol Service, two guards informed us the sculpture from the main car park had been stolen,” an account for the church tweeted.
Any info on its safe return would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Drumcliffe area over the weekend or with any information is asked to contact gardaí in Sligo on 071-9157000.

window displays for St. Patrick's Day

Winter might be returning this weekend and could rain, sleet or snow on our parade plus it’s going to be cold.  There will be vendors and music down in Market Square but like last year they didn’t do very well because it rained pretty steadily all day.  The pubs will do fine, they always do. :)

W.B. Yeats Statue

This original, unusual statue of Ireland’s national poet William Butler Yeats was unveiled by his son in 1989 to mark the 50th anniversary of the writer’s death.  The statue is located on Stephen Street, Sligo, in front of the Ulster Bank.  Fashioned by Irish sculptor Rohan Gillespie, the statue is distinctive for billowing shape, and its engravings of excerpts from some of Yeats’s best-known poems.
In 2005, the Yeats statue was demolished by a drunk driver who failed to stop for police. It was later restored again and returned to its original site.  (Courtesy of Choose Ireland website)
