The Cope, or the Templecrone Agricultural Co-operative Society is a co-operative retail chain indigenous to The Rosses area of County Donegal in Ireland. Founded in 1906, it has a number of normal supermarkets as well as a full department store, a builders merchants and an agricultural division.
The name comes from the inability of one of the founder shareholders to say Co-Op - as he could pronounce Cope, the name The Cope was adopted.
We have the same system here. My great grandfather opened the first Coop store in Tungelsta on our property. The store is still open for business at Another location today.
ReplyDeleteA bit quit again would love to see some people here.
ReplyDeleteVery neat and tidy.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I find it interesting that the shopping centre was derived from a speech impediment.
ReplyDeleteMy mother was a member of the Co-op grocery store here. She had a corresponding connexion with a woman in the UK who came with a group of housewives to Amsterdam and stayed with us a few days. In the summer my mother went with a group of Dutch Co-op housevives to Bristol and stayed at the house of this Misses Daisy I remember. I don't think the Co-op stores still excists here anymore. I never see one anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd enjoy shopping there! Actually there aren't many places I don't enjoy shopping at! LOL!
ReplyDeleteGreat story about how it got its name.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great story behind the name.
ReplyDelete...it was an empty day!
ReplyDeleteThe story about the naming of the place is amusing. It sounds like you can find anything you need here.
ReplyDeleteWell, one stop shopping has changed from "department stores." We have several food co-ops in the area.
ReplyDeleteInteresting story behind the name.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story about the name of this shopping center. I very rarely ever go into stores these days, and never shopping centers. They must be having a hard time.
