monday mural - alaska

I took a photo of this mural back in 2000 when we lived in Fairbanks.  Eventually this building, which I believe was the home of the Alaska Rag Co., was torn down and replaced with a Mariott Hotel the following year.   The Yukon Quest, a 1,000 mile Internstional Sled Dog Race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse, Yukon, begins on the Chena River which is right across the street.

  4. Love the colours in this mural, and the way it looks as though it was painted many years ago and it's survived a few Alaska winters.

  5. When I first saw this I thought, "What an unusual mural for Ireland!"--until I read your explanation. Very appealing, Bill!

  6. It's interesting that we have a completely different style of buildings here. I imagine available building materials are the reason.

  7. Alaska.... cold, cold!
When it is summer, I have an aversion to cold! When it is winter... I just have to cope. : )

    Nice mural!

  8. I have two friends who have experience riding in on a sled pulled by dogs. They enjoyed it very much but, I don't think they are up for a race.

  9. Living in Montreal, Canada, I am one of the perhaps few that love winter, Bill. This is a beautiful mural, thank you so much for sharing it.

  12. What a nice (long lost) mural! Thank you for the link to your former totem pole. What a dramatic piece to have in your very own home, and very fitting for Alaska.

  15. Oh well done Bill! This one will be remembered in photo form forever! I would be so fed up if I'd put in all that work and they had the cheek to knock the building down 😀

  16. Pity to lose a mural. Was in Anchorage five years ago and don't remember seeing many murals. Seems that native peoples murals would be a perfect theme for blah walls there. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
