choices

There are 1300 people in Killybegs according to the 2011 census.  I find it amazing that within a few blocks of each other there are 3 butchers.  It was the same in Ballinrobe last year when we lived there.  Three butchers in a small area all offering the same basic items.   Who to go to?  We go to Dave Ainsworth's simply because our neighbor bought some of his sausages for us to try and we loved them  They are good and he also has some Thai Chicken that is great and when you add some Thai vegetables, it's very tasty.

Our neighbor goes to Gallagher's simply because the butcher is a family member of a friend.  That's loyalty for you!

McLoone & Sons offers something different .  Along with the meats that everyone else has, he has a deli which I've seen quite a few people in there.  In warmer weather he has tables outside his shop which you can grab something to eat and have a seat.  I assume this shop is popular with tourists and is close to the harbour and visitor center.

  1. McLoone shop looks nice and friendly. But it have to be a really small town. I see nobody on Your pictures.

    1. The town doesn't begin to function until after 10am. Everything is closed until 10-10:30 and then businesses open up; people go to work. It was something that we had to get to use to when we moved here.

  2. I think it's great that you have so many. Once they're gone, you'll miss them!

  5. I wonder of they confer amongst each other Bill, to make sure they don't pinch each others specialty :)

  6. Do shoppers come from areas around the town to help support these businesses?

    1. There are cruise ships that make Killybegs one of their port stops. So summertime is real busy. This is our first winter season and it is quiet. Nice and laid back.

  7. I love the classic butcher shops like these. Reminds of a couple of places we would shop when I was growing up in Michigan.
