Bredagh River

The Bredagh River runs through Moville and parts of its trail were flooded.  In the photo below, the water rose high and fast enough to cover some of the stairs thus blocking the access to the other side.  No one was worrying about flooding here because we are on higher ground.  It was reported that parts of the north and west flooded after 101mm (4 inches) of rain fell in just 9 hours.  Our friend left a message on social media saying they lost everything but at least they had insurance.  Still it will take time to recover from such an event.

  1. Must be strange to see your common surroundings just changed in a terrible wild jungle.

  2. Hello Bill. We have been watching the unbelievable flooding from the storm on Tuesday & feel so bad for those whose homes are ruined. The amount of rain was so unusual.

  3. Didn't realise it was as bad as that. The problem with flooding is that if you have insurance you'll find that next year's premiums will rise to ridiculous levels.

  4. Nature is going wild so now and then and causes heavy damages. Sad message from your friend.

  5. If there is rain these days, we get too much. We go from drought to flooding. Glad you are on higher ground though I feel for your friends.

  7. It has been a rainy summer here as well. No floods reported in this city yet even though the river levels have risen.

And some world leaders don't believe in climate change!!

  8. Oh my, that's a heck of a lot of water to fall from the skies Bill! Thank heavens for insurance hey!

  9. I just kept thinking that an area that is so used to rain shouldn't flood but, I guess when it comes down all at once like that it creates a huge problem. I'm glad your friends had insurance but, I feel bad for their situation nonetheless.

  10. Insurance doesn't replace those things that can't be replaced, unfortunately.

That is a lot of water to fall out of a single system.

  14. Oh no -- I'm sorry about your friend's loss.... did not hear anything about that flooding -- it is terrible the way we don't get international news here... but it is a beautiful picture -- had there been no words one would never guess at the devastation.

  15. 4 in of rain in 9 hours is dangerous. I feel sorry for the people who lost everything.

  16. It does look bad, Bill! I am very sorry about your friend's loss. Here in Montreal we had a microburst (like a tornado, except a tornado moves upward whereas a microburst moves downward). Many trees fell and the city workers are still working on cleaning up the devastation, and this happened two days ago.

So sorry to hear about your friend, and others who may have been affected by this too.

    All the best Jan

  19. It's always shocking to see water take on such a powerful force. It can happen so suddenly.
