nature's wall art

seen on a stone wall in town.

This plant is Maidenhair Spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes), a small, evergreen fern often found growing in rock crevices or on old stone walls. It is characterized by its narrow, dark-green fronds with small, rounded leaflets arranged in pairs along a distinct blackish stem. The fern thrives in calcareous (lime-rich) habitats, specifically in cracks in rocks or cliff faces. It forms dense, rosette-like tufts that can reach up to 30 cm in length.
