greencastle harbour

Greencastle is about 4km from Moville.  Greencastle takes its name from the castle, built in 1305 by Richard de Burgo, the Earl of Ulster, to guard the entrance to Lough Foyle. The Greencastle Marina is situated in the heart of the village, providing secure and safe berthing at the mouth of Lough Foyle, Co. Donegal.   The Greencastle Marina is a preferred first port of call for yachts coming from Scotland or Northern Ireland.

gardai issues being reported on

The issues regarding the Gardaí are very concerning it said on the news.   The Garda Siochana had over-estimated the number of breath tests carried out each year by almost a million.  Another mistake also means around €150,000 road traffic offences may need to be wiped because of a clerical error by the gardaí and the latest scandal involves almost 15,000 wrongful road traffic convictions.
It's incredible that the Gardai can be so inept, no wonder their moral is down.

the all-out indefinte strike begins today

Bus Éireann, the state-owned transport company is facing financial difficulty, with losses last year reaching almost €10 million. It says changes to employees’ contracts are needed in order to keep the company viable.
These include job losses, changes to bus routes, cuts in overtime and a range of other measures.  The unions have strongly resisted these changes, and state that savings can be made elsewhere. Talks collapsed 10 days ago between both sides at the Workplace Relations Commission.
However, in the absence of management presenting a sustainable or equitable plan for the future of the company, which is agreed with workers, it has left our members with no option but to commence strike action.

We passed these houses on our way to community garden.  I liked the view as soon as I saw it.

preparing the bed

a few people who showed up Saturday, came prepared to get their plot ready.  Here this gentleman is spreading a new layer of compost on his bed.  It is still too cold to plant, night temps are currently running between 3C - 1C.  Sometime next month it will be time.

community garden

We had the first meeting with members of the community garden.  We got a plot outside and two wee ones inside the hoop house.  This garden is about a ten minute walk from out house.

mural by artist fritz

This mural can be seen in Sligo near the Gaavogue River.  The wall was commissioned by Sligo Tidy Towns.  Fritz wanted to create a mural that celebrated the Sligo connection that Bram Stoker has to the town and it’s possible influence on writing Dracula.

These photos finish the St. Patrick's Day parade.  It was great to see everyone having fun even in the rain.  More rain today too.  We need sun asap!

st. patrick's day parade 1

The parade started at 2:30 sharpish.  It was raining and we heard on the radio that a few communities in county Donegal were cancelling their festivities because of rain and gusty winds.  Moville still went ahead with their parade regardless of the rain and wind.  It was a great event in a small rural village, fun for everyone.
I'll be showing more of the parade on Sunday.

decorating for a saint

these guys (photos below) have been decorating the town the last few days for St. Patrick's Day.  Here they are hanging the bunting which is the colours of the Irish flag, green, orange and white.  The big parade happens at 2:30 sharp.  This will be our first St. Patrick's Day parade in Moville and we are glad that the move is now done and behind us :)
